When paper becomes a language…

Marlies Schulte’s exhibition “Transformations” is on display until August 25.

From a very young age, Marlies Schulte felt drawn to art. Her earliest memory is of a box of fold-out crayons that she loved, which allowed her to explore the spectrum of colors.

After years as a language teacher, she now lives only for art. In her artistic development, she is guided by the desire to find the secret of things and make it visible. Her artistic sensibility leads her to choose paper, canvas, or metal as the medium for her work, on which she seeks to find a language for the ineffable in color and form.

Several methods are combined.

Marlies works with pastels, explores the possibilities of watercolor, investigates the effect of chemical and organic substances on metal, and is drawn to oil painting and egg tempera.

Lately, she has been using paper to create images and sculptures. She combines different techniques, and the resulting richness allows her to reveal what lies beneath the surface.

In her works, this artist invites us to dream, opening two worlds before our eyes: one mineral, with metal taking on the magical colors of imaginary landscapes, and the other, with paper creations that become a language in themselves. « Marlies Schulte's work is impressive in its richness and diversity », said Frank Perard, Deputy Mayor for Culture, on the day of the exhibition's opening, « whether it be her subtly nuanced series or her most abstract works ».

« The act of creating is a double transformation », says Marlies Schulte. « The artist transforms the materials, and the creation, the work, the process, transforms the artist. And let's not forget the viewer of the paintings ; they too will be transformed by what they see ».

Plants are transformed into paper pulp or paintings, and the surface of metal (copper or brass) changes color and texture after treatment.

Take the time to get to know this multi-talented artist; her paintings speak to the viewer !
